Rainbow Light and Vitamin Angels Share Commitment to Fight Malnutrition Globally

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - (February 4, 2011) - Rainbow Light Nutritional Systems, a platinum-level, founding sponsor of Vitamin Angels, is committed to fighting malnutrition globally. In 2010, Rainbow Light donated 4 million vitamins to women and children in impoverished communities worldwide. Rainbow Light has donated well over 20 million prenatal and children's multivitamins since partnering with Vitamin Angels, and expects to increase donations to 5 million vitamins in 2011.

Rainbow Light was the first sponsor to institutionalize donations as a ratio of sales. For every ten bottles of Rainbow Light's prenatal multivitamins and Kid's One multivitamins sold, Rainbow Light contributes one bottle to Vitamin Angels, providing women and children in need with daily essential micronutrients to ensure maternal health and the healthy physical and cognitive development of the child.

For example, Rainbow Light's Prenatal One Multivitamin/Mineral provides a balanced micronutrient profile, including vitamin A, important minerals and extra folic acid, vitamin D and iron. Ginger, enzymes and probiotics help soothe the stomach and build a healthy immune system for both mother and baby.

"Children who are properly nourished are more likely to thrive physically and are able to take advantage of educational opportunities," explains Rainbow Light President Linda Kahler. "In impoverished areas, mother's milk is often the primary nutrient source during the first few years of a child's life. If the mother is undernourished, her child is also apt to lack adequate nutrient intake. This is why prenatal multivitamins are so important for women and their children."

By providing children under age 5 as well as pregnant and lactating women with daily doses of multivitamins, Vitamin Angels anticipates reduction in stunted growth, anemia, vitamin A deficiency and chronic malnutrition, resulting in reduced clinic visits and hospitalization, increased school attendance and decreased morbidity and mortality rates.

These nutritional supplements provide critical support to women and children who often subsist on such minimal diets as one bowl of rice and beans per day. Diets fundamentally lacking essential nutrients found in fresh fruits, vegetables and meat result in debilitating deficiency diseases. Especially in children five and under, something as common as a simple infection or diarrhea can lead to life-threatening illness.

In 2010, Rainbow Light donations to Vitamin Angels went primarily to Haiti and Ivory Coast. In 2011, their Kid's One Multivitamin donations will expand to benefit a program in Ethiopia.
